Project overview
Backround
The project involves a solar power plant in the Central Province of Zambia, with an AC capacity of 35 MW and a DC capacity of 50.5 MW, developed by ZAG Solar Chisamba Energy Limited. The electricity will be fed directly into the national grid, which is operated by ZESCO. It is expected to make a significant contribution to Zambia’s goals of supplying the country with more solar energy in the future to diversify its energy mix. This effort also contributes to increased access to electricity goals for Zambia in line with the National Energy Policy 2019, 2022 Renewable Energy Strategy and Action Plan, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 7.
In addition to the PV system, the project also includes infrastructure such as inverters, substations, grid connections, access roads, as well as construction, installation, and environmental measures. The project is based on the high levels of solar radiation in the Chisamba region, which makes the location particularly suitable.
Location
The planned solar farm will be built near Kwando Village under Chief Chamuka in Chisamba District, roughly 80 km north of Lusaka. The solar farm is planned to cover an area of 52 hectares and is located on non-critical land. Near the site is the Figtree 88/33 kV substation, which connects to the state-owned ZESCO power grid. It is located 6.7 km away and will later be connected to the project via an 88 kV power line.
Development status
The project is at an advanced stage of development; all relevant and mandatory studies:
- Feasibility Study
- Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)
- Grid Impact Study (GIS)
have been completed.
The technical design has been finalized.
An application has been submitted to Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) to have the project registered as a relevant infrastructure project.
A PPA with Africa GreenCo is currently under negotiation.
Schedule
Construction is targeted to begin in April 2027, with start of commercial operation expected by February 2028.
